Interesting facts about Tullamarine

Tullamarine is a suburb located in the northwestern part of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is home to Melbourne Airport, the primary airport serving Melbourne and the second-busiest airport in Australia. But there's more to Tullamarine than just the airport. Here are some interesting facts about this town:

1. The name 'Tullamarine' is derived from the term 'Tullamareena', an aboriginal warrior who fought against British colonization during the early years of Melbourne's settlement.

2. Tullamarine was originally a farming area that produced wheat, cattle, and fruit. Many of the farms were replaced by residential and industrial developments in the 20th century.

3. One of Tullamarine's most impressive landmarks is the Boeing 747-400 VH-OJA aircraft, known as the 'Qantas Founders Museum exhibit', located outside the Qantas Airways headquarters. This aircraft was the first Qantas Boeing 747-400 to be delivered and served for over 20 years, flying over 70 million passengers.

4. The Woodlands Historic Park is a 700-hectare parkland situated in Tullamarine. The park features the historic Woodlands Homestead, established in 1843, and is home to numerous bird species and other native wildlife.

5. Tullamarine is the birthplace of legendary Australian rules footballer Ron Barassi, who played for the Melbourne Football Club and Carlton Football Club in the 1950s and 1960s. Barassi is widely regarded as one of the sport's greatest players and coaches.

6. Tullamarine has a diverse community, with a significant number of residents from Italian and Greek backgrounds. This is reflected in the town's restaurants and cafes offering cuisines from these countries.

7. Tullamarine has a skate park, designed and built by renowned skatepark builder Convic. The park includes features such as quarter pipes, skateable artwork and a mini bowl.

8. One of Tullamarine's newer features is the Goonawarra Golf Course, which opened in 2000 and has quickly become a popular destination for golfers of all levels.

9. Tullamarine is located just 18 kilometers from Melbourne's CBD, making it a convenient location for visitors who want to explore the city while staying in a quieter, suburban area.

10. The Tullamarine Freeway is a major road linking the suburb to Melbourne's CBD, northern suburbs and western suburbs. It was opened in stages between 1958 and 1968 and is now one of Melbourne's busiest roads.
