Distinguished and Famous people from Tullamarine
🏡 John Pascoe Fawkner
John Pascoe Fawkner's connection with Tullamarine extended beyond his better-known role in early Melbourne. Parliamentary records list his holdings in the parish, while later heritage research describes the cooperative land scheme through which large allotments were purchased and divided into smaller blocks. Members contributed towards the purchase and received land in proportion to their payments. Fawkner hoped to encourage small landholders and challenge the dominance of large pastoral interests. These activities belong to the nineteenth-century parish landscape, before airport development and suburban growth transformed much of the district.
🐑 George Coghill
George Coghill acquired land in the Tullamarine parish and established Glencairne, with a bluestone homestead, stables and a boiling-down business. Such works processed livestock for products including tallow during a period when pastoral enterprise shaped the area. He also joined John Pascoe Fawkner in a cooperative land-investment venture. Melbourne Airport's heritage assessment records those holdings and activities within the earlier rural landscape. The buildings and businesses behind the name help explain an industrial and farming district that existed well before Tullamarine became familiar primarily through air travel.
